Volo ut sis

I want you to be.

I love you. I want you to be who you are.

What a gift. To love enough to let people be who they are.

As someone who has spent decades working with clients in deeply existential conversations, where my starting point is to see the magnificence of a human under the costume of society and environment, I am inclined to believe that Volo ut sis is directed at the person underneath the costume and masks.

Authentic. A word coopted and abused to the point of irrelevance.

From the online Etymology Dictionary.

Authentic – from Greek authentikos “original, genuine, principal,” from authentes “one acting on one’s own authority,” from autos “self” (see auto-) + hentes “doer, being”

It can take a lifetime to untangle from the costumes and masks of social and environmental constructs – the scripts written over our being from the moment we are born.

To have our behaviour and actions align with our being and authenticity.

To decontaminate from stories that are not ours and operating systems that we did not sanction, or even have an awareness of.

When considered in this light, we are all culture makers. Untangling, unhooking, and moving ever closer to our authentic being, is one of the greatest revolutionary acts.

When we extend this privilege to our fellow human family – all of them – we ignite a flame of human possibility.

When we deny this privilege to some people – for any manner of reasons – we animate the world of division.

Do you work to unite, or divide?

The generosity of Volo ut sis is profound.
