The future is in our hands

Democracy says that the people have a voice. This can be expressed in many different ways, from representative democracy to direct democracy.

Power and politics hate democracy. Peter Thiel, one of the tech oligarchs, quoted that democracy and freedom are incompatible.

One might ask, for whom? The people, or the tech bros? 

Democracy is the only way the will of the people can and does challenge power. 

It is a forever activity, never passive. 

Not just a vote.

Protest. Writing letters. Speaking out.

It has a price. Like anything of value. 

Time. Energy. Love. Danger. Consequence. Retribution.

Heroes from our current and past times are often the ones who stood, against the odds, for justice.

Often they are called terrorists, or communists or socialists. Another form of othering. To make bad. It is easier for the public to hate on someone with a label. 

Sometimes they are hounded to death, literally.

We might learn a few things.

1. Know that democracy is an active choice of participation. If you want democracy to continue, you need to be active.
2. Know that our governance systems, as they currently stand, are not designed to maintain democracy. When money can buy elections, when the algorithm is designed to manipulate outcomes, and the right to vote is challenged, the people are not able to make choices based on knowledge symmetry. 
3. Beware of assuming that the person power names as the bad guy is the bad guy. Or the rogue state is the rogue state. Ask instead why power profits from this bad guy being bad, this bad state being a bad state. The ‘bad state’ might indeed be the rebel army equivalent of Star Wars, fighting against Empire.
4. Make decisions based not on what power/leadership says or promises, but on what they do. If you value integrity, vote for people who act with integrity. If you value honesty, vote for honesty. If no one in the voting pool is honest, make that known.
5. Notice when you defend a leader or position. Interrogate that defence. Do this as a practice. It keeps us honest. 

History tells the tale, again and again, of revolutions and uprisings. Suppression, while horrid, is a temporary state. 

The future is in our hands. Not the politicians or the tech bros. 

And this is why they hate democracy.
