Are we kind
On Wednesday my love had open heart surgery, an extreme trauma to his body, mind, being.
The field of support for him has been beautiful.
I often think about the nature of humanity. Adversity really is a test of character. Are we kind? Do we offer love? Do we allow the enormity of feelings to flood our being, sometimes so overwhelming we cannot stand upright?
Or do we become a blade of anger, as I have seen these last few days? Attacking even those who are doing their best against difficult circumstances beyond their control.
These last few years have fractured decency. Perhaps it was never there, and I am naive.
What is the antidote to hate speech, words spoken with cruelty, the raging violence of so many people?
Beneath it all, perhaps, lies such an inner breaking, the type of healing that needs its own version of open heart surgery.
My love has been held in the thoughts of so many. Kindness and love are the greater forces. I am grateful.
