Author your own special day

This day means so many different things.

It is my cousin-in-laws Birthday.

It is a time when people feel alone, or crowded.

When we might eat and drink too much, or go hungry.

When many spend hours preparing food.

Where we gather.

For many, it is just another day.

A long time ago my daughter and I decided to move our celebration of Mother’s Day to the weekend before or after….because the day itself had become too hard, too commercial. The point for us is to celebrate mothers.

I feel the same about Christmas. Too busy, too commercial, too difficult.

Even if you are a Christian, the day itself is not the actual day of Christ’s birth. It is a metaphor.

Given all the plans we had to gather family turned topsy turvy thanks to COVID, we will have the quietest Christmas Day.

Instead, we will create a day sometime in the future when the family can get together, flights and accommodation will be affordable, the rush to supermarkets will not be an issue.

Today we went surfing for two hours, we will have a small lunch and celebrate being alive, being lucky, being in love, having our health.

Today is a day to cherish the small things. To be with loved ones, even if virtual. To taste something surprising. To gift a smile.

Where ever you are I wish you a day of love, joy and peace. A day to soak in whatever abundance you have…be that sun, or snow, togetherness or aloneness.

Topsy turvy, this 25th of December, author your own special day. And perhaps, repeat on the 26th, and the 27th, and the 28th…
