Bullies pick their victims

If you have been following my journey you will know I am learning to surf.

This morning, I was in the line up, way down the end of the line, where I usually sit—the place with fewer people and less danger.

An older man on a stand-up paddle board kept catching waves and then paddling around me to take a premier position. In so doing, persistently hogging the wave. This is called snaking.

This is what bullies do. This is what greed and superiority do. They pick on the little people, those with lesser skill or means, those who are always at the end of the line.

Bullies are everywhere. We have a culture that celebrates the bullies. They are called ‘winners.’ They love to play what they term ‘losers,’ because they know they can win. They are not like true sports champions who play their equals competitively because it is what makes them better.

Bullies play the game of power, the disposal of people, the domination, the belittling.

This time, in the surf, the bully did not get away with it. He met me, feisty me.  Inelegant, feisty me.

Bullies pick their victims. Rather than focus on stopping bullies, learn to not be a victim.

We get the world we have because we have not learned to say no to bullies, to stop being the victim.
