Cide

Dec 15, 2025

Cide

To kill or cut.

Ecocide.

Genocide.

Infanticide.

Homocide.

Suicide.

Bactericide.

I wake up to the news of a terror act in my home country, quite an unusual event given our gun laws. The last mass shooting was nearly thirty years ago.

I condemn any form of violence. I condemn any form of hate toward any group of people.

We live in a world where ‘…cide’ – add your prefix – is a runaway train.

Killing our home planet. Killing people not like us. Killing children.

I sincerely question why we humans, capable of incredible acts of kindness and courage, enact cide with such ease.

Yet we do.

The entanglement is an issue. To think nothing of killing our home planet for personal gain is a fractal of the thought that killing ‘others’ is acceptable. To think nothing of factory farming is a fractal of the thinking that says it is OK to herd people into ghettos.

All people are worthy of equality, dignity and justice.

The moment we add a special case is the moment we propagate division, and division creates fear, which creates cide. I refuse to use the words that do this. Stop marginalising, targeting, and discriminating against humans. Period.

I mourn for the innocent killed in the last 24 hours. All of them. Those attending a festive celebration at Bondi, those in Sudan, those in Palestine, those in Ukraine.

My prayer is that we end the ridiculous categorisation and division of people.

One human family.

One human family.
