Clean sport has a purity to it

A long time ago I started running to lose weight and get fit after having a baby.

I never knew running would become a defining part of my life, a place to see myself when I wanted to quit, to keep going when everything hurt.

From running I moved into triathlon. In my community, in those days, we would get the world champion athletes training during our summer, their northern winter.

At my local pool, we had several gold medalists.

I knew many elite athletes, and quite a few gold medalists.

I cannot watch swimming, running and triathlons without getting emotional. I have a very small idea of the focus, determination and effort it takes to be the best.

I prefer the success of an athlete to the success in business. Penultimate success in most businesses is enabled by corruption, dog-eat-dog, exploitation, extraction from others, nature and beauty, and unfair advantage.

Clean sport has a purity to it. A level playing field. Of course, this is not completely true. Rich countries have advantages of facilities, training, equipment and game opportunities.

I watched the opening ceremony in Paris this morning, and my emotions bubbled to the surface.
