Creating human enterprises
I spent the first few days of June facilitating a retreat in Switzerland. It was a privilege and a pleasure to be invited.
We had a little healing work to do, followed by some strategic planning. On the last day, I introduced some of the material I teach in the Syntropic Enterprise Masterclass—specifically, the Trust Manifesto—about creating ecologies of synergy and trust.
I was surprised by the pushback from some of the team. Yet I should not be surprised.
People are so used to doing without considering the ground and being of their doing.
We want to move towards the thing, yet fail to design the context in which we move together.
We know we have to work well as a team, yet the idea that to design the space for a team to become great takes consideration and design, is an anathema to most people.
Why do we need to do that? Let’s just get going.
Relational design is where the magic lies. Taking the time to get the relational design aligned, coherent and synergised is one of the most powerful steps that can be taken.
Or not.
Most of my income has come from the ‘or not’. Those who step right over relational design and blast into action, under a strange illusion that their team will miraculously cohere without any effort, design, or thought. This can happen, yet it is the extreme exception and not the norm. Most often, the team falls into a messy human heap – with scales of ugly from minor to major.
I am interested in designing exceptional teams that then create brilliant work far in advance of what they thought possible, where the time is spent doing the great work and not cleaning up the mess between people.
Business as usual refuses to think about relational design. Business as usual rarely cares about the nature and the quality of the relationships.
In a Syntropic World, the nature and quality of the relationships are more important than the project we are working on.
We are indeed creating human enterprises, where the human matters.
