Do the hard things in a human way

In every major decision, we reach a place where a set of moral or ethical codes, beliefs, or principles defines our next step, or not.

Knowing our codes—the Pattern Integrity—those principles, beliefs, and values that are a threshold we will not cross under any circumstances, will make our decisions easier.

When things get hard, and things have a habit of getting hard, our very Pattern Integrity will be tested to the extreme. This is the parable of the forty days and forty nights in the desert. And the temptations and seductions we all face.

This is why integrity is so hard.

At exactly this point, integrity asks us to choose between what we hold as foundational to our existence and the other, easier path of capitulation.

This is the threshold crossing of courage.

It is also why courage is rare in leadership. 

Principles are damned for extraneous things like profit, profile, and status. 

Do the hard things in a human way. Go against the tide. 

For the very moment we do not, we become separated from our humanity.
