I apprentice to nature

I apprentice to nature

I apprentice to the ocean. To the tawny frogmouth wooting in the tree outside my window.

To the sunrise, each day so beautiful, so unique, so consistent.

The ocean teaches me humility. She can carry me on a board, and toss me like a toothpick. She is clear and clean, then turbulent and cloudy. From silky smooth to angry. She laughs at man’s attempt to stop her from eating the beach. ‘Ha!’ She says. ‘You know nothing!’

I wonder how man became so arrogant to even think himself smarter than Mother Nature. To think he could bend the wind to his will, to hollow out the ground, to bulldoze the swamps and wetlands, to over fish the oceans and rivers. To poison, using the Earth as the place to hide our lack of consideration to waste nothing.

I apprentice to nature, she is the infinite university. To hear her teach I must slow down, become silent, watch, observe, listen, wait…
