Mission drift
Slowly, slowly, then suddenly, mission drift happens.
We start with the bold Source Idea. It has a Pattern Integrity as part of the idea.
The idea can manifest in an infinite variety of forms.
When we dilute the number of shareholders and decision makers, when we invite more collaboration, if the mission is not anchored as sacred ground, it will drift and erode.
We might wake up one day and realise that what we started is not what we have.
If you want to avoid mission drift, there are a few easy, yet critical steps.
Be able to name the mission, purpose or idea so clearly that others get it straight away.
Know with equal clarity the Pattern Integrity of the mission – its particularities, values and expressions that are integral to it. The Pattern Integrity is what you champion fiercely. The Steward of the Source Idea in a Syntropic Enterprise is responsible for never allowing the Pattern Integrity to be violated.
Depending on the scale of your enterprise, you might need to design enterprise architecture, agreements, and legal codes that encode the Pattern Integrity.
Make every decision and take every action against the backdrop of the Pattern Integrity. In every expression, the Pattern Integrity should be evident.
Mission drift is tragic. It is a little like compromise and corner-cutting. Slicing off pieces of something beautiful for all the wrong reasons.
When we engage with an enterprise, business or art, when the Pattern Integrity is clearly evident, we experience beauty and integrity.
