Only two operating codes
Of the many, many operating codes of Nature – tried and tested over 14 billion years – consider these two.
Nature doesn’t do waste. Everything is recycled – upcycled or downcycled. Even death is the fodder for new life.
Nature doesn’t do excess. Only sufficiency. It is not into accumulation and hoarding.
Now imagine human life on Earth. We, in our foolish blindness, believe we are such smart innovators. Look at our technology. Our cities. Yet we have failed to learn and apply these two key lessons from the most successful designer we know.
Show me any human-created product that has its entire life cycle considered and deliberately repurposed in its original design before it is manufactured so that there is zero waste. This cycle far exceeds the idea of a circular economy.
Show me humans, cities and countries that know sufficiency. Where accumulation is an anathema to existence and intention.
Imagine a world where these two design principles are intrinsic to everything we do.
Some of us, used to obscene excess, might have to learn to live with less. Others of us, the majority, on the threshold of non-existence every day, might re-learn how to breathe without fear of survival. And all of us will be better for zero waste in all things.
Of course, we will not be doing this in the interest of profit and win as much as you can.
We will be doing this in service to the sacredness of all life.
