Pacing

As I write this I watch hundreds of people run past me 5 kilometres into the Gold Coast Marathon, a run I have completed 10 times.

42 kilometres of running requires starting at a pace you can finish. In the heat of the start it is easy to get caught in the fray of adrenalin.

To go inward, to hold back and stay steady, might give you a chance to have the energy needed in those last 5 kilometres, where things get very hard.

It is a discipline. Bravado doesn’t cut it.

Knowing when to slow down and when to sprint is a process of self trust.
