Synchronicity and Business
I was at an event hosted by a client a few weeks ago, and one of the speakers said, “We are an industry that believes in magic. Magic is an illusion.”
And in a world of straight lines (no such thing) and 5-year business plans, of a focus on activity, outcomes, targets, and the ‘bottom’ line, magic is indeed hard to find. I would also find this world simply intolerable to live in.
Synchronicity is a form of magic. It is defined as the simultaneous occurrence of events that appear significantly related but have no discernible causal connection.
It is the act of thinking about someone, and they call. Or deciding that you need to learn more about ‘x’ and suddenly the teacher appears.
I believe this world, where synchronicity and magic are normal operations, is constantly available and trying to get our attention. But we have blocked it out in our addiction to haste, busy, targets, goals, projections…where not a minute is spare to be spontaneous, live in the unknown, on the very edge of emergence.
Yet the more I allow space for the miraculous, unpredictable, synchronistic, the more it shows up. The more I allow creativity in all its unkempt forms, the more I am open to this other world. My imagination and creative intelligence are expanded, tapping into sources and places that defy rationalisation and neat packaging.
It is in this world that my genius is found. The world of daydreams, cloud drifting.
Sure, there is a place for linear focus, tasks, outcomes…perhaps a lesser place than we think.
When a miracle is called for, it is not found in the linear world of spreadsheets and bottom lines…it is found by tapping into the vast intelligence of which we are all a part. Stepping into the unknown, the uncertain, right off the edge.
Synchronicity is a matter of listening to the hum of another world, the one beneath the noise of our daily life. It is to this world I choose to give my primary attention, for here lies wisdom of the ages.
