Taking the drop

Like every sport I have done, learning to surf – and I am not sure I will ever not be learning to surf – is filled with metaphors and lessons for life.

Taking the drop is when your board goes off a steep wave, and as you jump to your feet you drop. It is both terrifying and exhilarating.

You have to be confident you can both get to your feet and then ride out the wave.

This morning I took the drop quite a few times. It was amazing. And fun.

I also tangled with the reef, luckily escaping with only a minor cut.

The ocean is to be respected. The moment you assume you know her ways, she trumps you.

In my life and work, the time is coming to take a drop. To ride a bigger wave. Knowing I can jump to my feet and ride it out. No guarantees. You do the preparation, you visualise. You practice. But at some point, you must go over the top of the wave.

There will be cuts and bruises. Mistakes will be made. Respect for the larger game is necessary. Arrogance and cockiness are to be avoided at all costs, for the moment arrogance arises, the Universe has ways to have you bend to your knees.

This is inevitable. We just cannot predict when.

I watch as cocky men go about their superior ways, and I know they face a fall. It happens to all of us.

Divine justice and Kairos time play their hand.

I will return to the water more confident and yet deeply respectful to the force of Nature I am seeking to learn from. I need to hold the polarity of both confidence and respect at all times.
