The battle between the old gods and the new
Neil Gaiman’s incredible book, American Gods, portrays the battle between the old gods and the new. Included in the new are the gods of media – titan gods of today.
This intersection between the old and new is a forever human battle. Traditional – modern. Young people – older people. Progress – sameness. Old job – new job.
There is a richness to be learned from the in-between. That no-space where one stage is disintegrating, and the next is emerging.
The uncertainty of times. Not knowing. It is both terrifying and exhilarating. It is the in-between that shapes our character. How do we respond to no-thing-ness?
Life and living is all of it. Building a foundation of experience, stepping out into the unknown and wobbling on unsteady feet, heart, mind, exploring an edge, and then building a new foundation.
We get it wildly wrong when we cling to any station as the place to be, making all other stations wrong.
The practice is to constantly challenge any station or stand we hold as permanent, right, THE one way.
The substrate of life – the field – is a reverence for – a deep and abiding respect for – glorious, gorgeous, mysterious, emergent, forever unknowable life. Love. Beauty. Integrity.
Lived in service to life beyond us.
