The old vote
My father is about to turn 92. He is a die-hard reader of the Murdoch media, which makes him, by default, a neoliberal. I used to be one of those.
Australia goes to the polls this weekend.Â
As I get older, I think about my vote differently. I want to be sure I vote for the young to have a dignified future. To do this, I must invest in understanding them. Spending time with them. Listening to their music. Understand the issues they face in a world very different from my youth.
It is their future I vote for. Not mine.Â
This is the responsibility of eldership. To vote for the future of the young. To allow them the opportunity of a better world. To put aside our worldview, our bias, and pay deep attention to the issues and concerns of the younger people.
This is to be a good ancestor.Â
Or we can just be old, selfish and rigid. Such a waste of a vote.
