The skill of holding space

The deep fatigue of holding space for others is unlike any other type of fatigue.

It is as if every drop of energy has been spent. It cannot be restored simply by sleep. It requires an intense letting go of any mental effort or input.

These are the times when entertainment plays a part: a juicy novel, a great TV series, roaming streets without an agenda, and a free-floating mind and being.

I have just spent the morning wandering the streets of the Old Town of Geneva. Cobblestones, warm sunshine, and the very French Swiss feel of a city. I have a backlog of work to do, yet now is not the time.

Now is the time to not do. Everything can wait.

First, to fill my cup of energy by not filling it with mental work or holding space.

Our society discounts the ability to hold space. It is often an invisible act, yet crucial work with teams and stewardship.

We need to cultivate the skill of holding space and intention, yet more importantly, we need to name and value it.
