Tumbling

There was a lot of tumbling in the surf today. Inelegant. Arms. Legs. Higgeldy-piggledy.

There is something truly magnificent about being tossed around like a piece of straw by the might of the ocean.

She teaches respect.

Something our captains of government and industry might learn.

Respect for Nature.

She is majestic. Beautiful. And cruel.

She sings sweet songs – all calm and surreal. And then whips your butt the moment you think you have her measure.

Imagine if the eco-terrorists we consider leaders had to spend weeks or months in the wildness, unaided. The hero’s journey they mythologise. The rugged manly man individual.

Would they learn respect?

Most of them would not survive. I am not sure they would be missed by many.

Nature humbles us. Nature is humbling us. While those currently wrapped in a delusional blanket of wealth and power believe they can out run, out spend and out fox Nature, Nature scorned will bring humanity to its knees.

I am grateful for my tumbling surf session. Humility recalibrated, once again.
