We are democracy
Democracy is between a rock and a hard place.
Do we vote for this person or that? This party or that one?
As all parties roll over and shrug in the face of genocide.
I think of those Palestinians in Northern Gaza, alive now but dead this week, collateral damage as the two major parties in the USA refuse to address atrocities because of the fear of the Israeli Lobby. This hard-to-read but highly-researched article is closer to the truth than what we are fed through mainstream media. My heart is broken.
This atrocity, one of the many, many thousands happening under the watch of Western Imperial Democracy.
Democracy, like any system, will never be perfect. It requires the full participation of citizens, writing, protesting, getting out on the streets – demanding their elected officials address issues that they would rather not.
Therefore, when we vote, particularly when the vote is between a rock and a hard place, we must vote for the party that shows the highest concern for the continuation of democracy. We must vote for the party that will listen and respond the most the the voices of the protestors and people.
Indeed, we must vote for a party that allows peaceful protest to happen in the first place.
And after the vote is done, we must act, demanding our representatives address the existential crisis of our times, be that war on black and brown people, women, or LGBTQ or the complete capture of our world to late-stage capitalism and the terminal greed that will kill us all, even those who have become bloated from its spoils.
We are democracy. It lives and dies on our watch.
