Who is responsible?

Jan 12, 2023

Who is responsible?

If we turn a blind eye, does that make us responsible? If we know really bad things are happening, acts perpetrated by members of our community, and we do nothing, are we responsible?

People get away with bad behaviour because we let them.

It matters not if the perpetrator is a family member or someone in a position of authority and power. Even a beloved member of our tribe.

The price for our silence creates ripples that cross continents, a groundswell of bad behaviour that becomes normal.

Those ripples will eventually engulf us.

A Catholic priest died this week, a man who at the least ignored terrible crimes by the people he was in charge of. Crimes that affected the lives of thousands of children.

Those people who now claim him a saint are as guilty as the priest himself.

For a religion that claims love and compassion, the hypocrisy is stunning.
