Wilful resistance

Wilful resistance

Both of my parents are alive, one is 92 years old and remarried at 80, the other is 88, lives independently and drives.

I understand resistance to technology. I am a fan of the Luddite movement, as we must be able to draw the line between real and digital. I am an advocate for cash.

But wilful resistance that costs you and others is stupidity.

Technology has always been a tension in human affairs. The use of weapons, fire, hammers. The choice is there, for good or ill.

We are the choice-makers, harder now in the age of the algorithm and addictive capture.

Yet how we use technology is our choice.

To choose to resist technology that makes life better or smooths experience is stubbornness.

My father is going through issues with his eyes. A violent refusal to use a mobile phone means he is hard to reach, and that he has no idea that in 2025, an app will do the reading for him. He had no idea that you can travel the world and use a translation app to smooth the language barrier. He would rather be right about his wilful refusal than be open to the possibility of a value add.

Having a mobile phone with you allows contact if you get lost, or someone needs to reach you, or you need to reach them. This is not an intrusion. It is valuable.

Every generation comes face-to-face with a technological hurdle. The moment you resist it to remain in the Universe of comfort and same-same, is the moment you increase the separation you have with the current world and the younger generation.

What is your technological edge that you are resisting?

This is a question to ask every year. And every year, to jump into the resistance.
