Words we use reinforce and animate the world
I have been thinking about the words we use to describe parts of the world.
The Global South and the Global North are examples.
I live in the Global South literally, yet it is not the Australian people who are referred to when they speak of the Global South.
Then we have ‘developing’ countries. Developing what? The USA is developing authoritarianism with a touch of communism. You might even call this regression.
Perhaps recovering countries might be better. Countries recovering from colonisation and hegemony. Recovering from exploitation, manipulation and extraction to almost extinction.
And then we have Palestine. Not recovering. Being bombed into non-existence with the support of the extractive, exploitative, historical and current colonisers.
And places like Sudan, where the colonising countries look the other way. Forgotten countries.
And Haiti, now a desiccated country. Abandoned.
There are some emerging countries. Coming to life after being decimated by greed, emerging countries a stage slightly beyond recovering countries. These are rare. The boot of Empire likes to keep a country, like they do their people, in addict mode, trapped in drama cycles and scarcity existence, so they can play the unseen hand of power, resource and financial wealth grab.
When we call them what we, the colonisers and hegemony, have done to them, with greater accuracy, we get to name the disease.
Once named, we might just act differently. I am no longer assured of this, watching the sycophants around the Trump table. Lying. Cheating. Hypocrisy. Yet I am assured that we are in the last stages of a Molochian system breakdown.
