Beauty demands entry

Beauty demands entry

A sea eagle landed on the beach beside us this morning. This beautiful creature made me think of Nature, of its majestic complexity. How people like David Attenborough have translated Nature for our ready access.

When we live in and close to Nature’s expression, we might find it harder to dismiss it as an object for our benefit. It breaks my heart to see what we do to our Earth and her creatures, just as it breaks my heart to see what humans do to other humans in the pursuit of something transient, like power or fame.

Allowing ourselves to feel, really feel, be that the intimacy of another human, or the overwhelming touch of beauty, is hard for many people. We are primed from an early age to consider the fullness of feeling as dangerous, exposing our vulnerability, which we have confused with weakness.

Beauty demands entry. To dismiss it is to live a barren life.

To allow beauty access, we must surrender the scaffolding we have constructed to project strength.

Beauty is a snotty business. It is designed to unravel us so we can become beautiful.
