Liberty is at risk

Liberty is at risk

What is liberty? The condition of a free person; absence of restraint; permission to do and say.

If we do not have the liberty to tell people, especially elected representatives, what they do not want to hear, do we have liberty?

If we are policed for standing up for something power doesn’t like, do we have liberty?

If we cannot protest peacefully, are we free?

In these times, liberty is at risk. Even in my country, people are being prosecuted in some way, from losing their jobs to being arrested, for speaking up against horror and genocide.

It might seem somewhat innocuous. But it is not. When we cannot speak freely in a democratic society about things that go against the government consensus, when our words are in peaceful yet clear protest, and we are punished for them, liberty is lost.

One Little Atrocity at a time.

Which makes these times extremely dangerous.

This means that our voices are ever more urgent now.

This is not the time for silence.
