How to create team coherence around your purpose and your idea to bring it to life
A Framework for Team Vision, Emergent Action and Coherence
1. Long-term Vision Questions for Teams
Establish a coherent collective understanding of the purpose.
You might ask questions like this.
- How will you know we have achieved our purpose? What will be evident? Describe the evidence thoroughly. Get everyone to speak to this evidence, and to highlight the most important elements by team agreement.
- What will no longer be there when you have achieved your purpose? Be very specific.
- Why does this purpose matter to you? Be very specific. (Everyone answer.)
2. Establish the Non-Negotiable Pattern Integrity Values and Principles
Non-negotiable means that if they are violated, the very purpose and reason for being together will be made null and void. Choose wisely and carefully. Ground each one in a clear collective understanding, speaking of what they mean. Integrity as a principle is not enough. How will you know you have integrity? Be very specific. How will you know if integrity is violated? Repeat this with every non-negotiable.
3. Complete a Synergistic Audit as Individuals and as a Team
What you have the capacity, willingness and desire to bring to the enterprise and team and what you expect in return. If any of these changes, you are responsible for informing people of the changes and negotiating if needed.

4. Complete a Synergistic Audit of the Enterprise
What it has and what it needs. (This can be the same as the team audit, although sometimes it can be beneficial to look at the enterprise as a whole system.
5. Clarify the Idea You Are Animating to Achieve Your Purpose
Be sure not to conflate the idea with a particular form. Form often emerges. For example, when I started Syntropic World, I was teaching live classes and did not think it was possible to teach virtually. COVID changed that by necessity. The idea was teaching. The form changed.
Now We Have Created the Field
The four elements are. (These are the elements of the tetrahedron, the minimal viable system in Universe. By naming these elements, we have designed the field for your enterprise. It is from the field that the next step will emerge.)
- Purpose
- Pattern Integrity
- Synergistic Accounting (individual, collective, enterprise)
- Source Idea
Holding the Source Idea in Tension with the Purpose
Ask: What is the next step? The immediate next step.
It might not be immediately obvious. It might need Kairos time. (The next step can be to wait.)
It is the next natural, unforced, emergent step. (A living system.)
Consider this possible next step in tension with the Pattern Integrity. Will it violate anything?
What might be the precessional effects of this next step? Syntropic Stewards are responsible for the Precessional effects, so it is wise to consider them.
Once everyone has agreed to the next step, we use Synergistic Accounting to provision it.
Then we repeat the question about the next step again, knowing that when we have implemented step one, the field has changed. Spending too much time on planning steps 2 and 3 at the step 1 stage is a waste, given that we may never move in that direction.
Summary
The alignment and coherence of the team happen with clarifying the key pieces so that everyone has a comprehensive understanding. (Purpose, Pattern Integrity, Synergistic Accounting, Source Idea). Please note: This assumes the team already have in place the Trust Manifesto/Trust Agreement. Team coherence will not be stabalised without a Trust Manifesto.
