Little circles in bigger circles

You have an experience. It becomes a story in your head. It matters not if it is true. If you give the story permission to occupy your inner territory, like a rogue coloniser, then the story will relentlessly reject everything that is not the story.

This happens in a little circle of daily life. The personal affronts. The feeling of being rejected. Confusion.

The story plants roots and becomes much bigger, far exceeding its origins. It feeds off all the other webs of stories about our inadequacies, our failures, our insecurities.

Now it is a bigger circle. Not only has it colonised a place in our thinking and emotional being. It has created its own city with a host of infrastructure to support its propagation and growth.

In the exterior world, we step over little atrocities. Lies. Deception. Corruption. In their infancy.

In the interior world, we step over the little atrocities of unchallenged, unreconciled stories.

The interior and exterior feed off each other.

The antidote to both is to say no to the colonisation of everything that is not love, beauty and life-affirming.

Easy to say. Harder to practice. Courage is required. And a deep self-love that becomes all-other-love.

I return to the practice mat, bent in humility, the lesson all over my face.
