Riding the wave

Riding the wave

I am learning to surf. It helps that I am a water person, and a thirty-year regular squad swimmer at my local pool.

Yesterday I learned a simple yet oh-so-easy-to-forget lesson.

You have to look up and towards where you want the board to go.

I had been looking down, at the board, and even more scarily, down the face of the wave, and in so doing, seeing a future of crashing into the sand at terrifying speeds.

You have to look up and towards where you want the board, and you, to go.

This simple little lesson applies to surfing, snowboarding, bike riding, and life.

Focusing down, seeing a terrifying future, will not get you to a place where you can ride the wave.

The best steering we have is to see the future we are aiming for.
