The boss, the leader and the steward

Sunset over a calm sea with an orange sky and dark clouds; silhouettes of people on the shore.

The boss, the leader and the steward

The boss fixes problems and tells people what to do. Everyone knows who they are and can go to them with their problems. The boss bosses. Do this. Don’t do that. They inspire by being great at solutions. Yet they do not create teams of self-reliance and responsibility. The boss, as a shadow expression, includes the autocrat and the bully.

The leader creates followers. They go first. Take the risk and bear the responsibility. They inspire by example. They, too, tell people what to do, although to a lesser degree. The shadow leader uses spell casting, gaslighting, propaganda, and manipulation to get people to follow their lead.

The steward creates cultures. A great steward creates cultures of synergy, where individuals are far better for working together. To steward a culture of synergy is to help people know where they are going and why, and then set the boundary conditions for how we do this together. How we treat each other, respond to threats and uncertainty, reward multiple forms of contribution, handle upsets, make decisions, and remain committed to the core principles. Oftentimes, great stewards work behind the scenes; their role may not require being the public face. Shadow stewards leverage exploitation, where people turn on themselves.

The boss, the leader and the steward are neither right nor wrong. They are each appropriate in different contexts.

In Syntropic World, we teach stewardship as the primary expression, as creating cultures of synergy unleashes the greatest exponential possibility we have as humans in Universe. However, a great steward knows how to lead and to boss. If they have created the right cultural architecture, using tools like the Trust Manifesto and Synergistic Accounting, the need to boss or lead becomes infrequent.
