Rebuilding a life in the midlife zone
For most of us, our youth is scripted. Do this, then that. Worse now, with the stream of fake perfection on Social Media making everything we do look shabby.Â
We move towards this scripted future without questioning why, and who says, and what for.
In midlife, or later life, or sometime after yes’ing to everything as instructed by a set of unchallenged expectations, we start to wonder why.Â
Why am I here?Â
Why do I live my life like this?
What matters?
What do I want – really want – that comes from me and not the script?
If we do not attend to the questions, the questions attend to us by throwing a hefty spanner in the works.Â
The more we ignore the questions, the more likely we will find ourselves with a blank sheet of paper inviting us to rebuild our life as we desire it.
This time of starting again is often more terrifying than in our youth, for there is more at stake. We have accumulated things and perhaps responsibilities like children and mortgages.
And yet there is a tremendous opportunity being offered.Â
Before we jump to one path, we might drop deep into our being and examine the truth of our lives and what we want most of all.Â
There will be a few key elements, not an exhaustive list, that will shape the architecture of our future. The big rocks that we place down first, before the filler of sand and water.
For example.Â
To be surrounded by nature.
To not have to manage a property or stuff.
To only work with integrous, ethical and positive people.
To go surfing every day.Â
To have time to read, or write.
To have time to spend with our family. To never miss the important events.
To do work that makes a difference and feels deeply satisfying.
Consider these first, before jumping into massive change.
Then build a life around them, the central anchor points of your existence.
From this structure, the rest will emerge.
